His importance to the team since his arrival two summers ago is not up for debate. Lucas Ocampos arrived from Marseille in the summer of 2019 as an interesting player, gradually becoming a key player for the current Europa League holders. In particular, the persistence of the winger, which has not just helped him secure a first international call-up a year ago, becoming a permanent fixture for Argentina since making his debut, but also to lift himself up while physical problems have hindered him playing at the same high level that he did throughout his first season in Nervión.
And of course, his journey through the final phase of the Europa League was not simple at all. The physical demands were huge and his late goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers was decisive, sending the Nervionenses into the semi finals. The Argentine has continued to demonstrate his commitment to the cause this season, but a very demanding fixture list and injuries to players in the same position has meant things have not been easy at all for the winger.
He led the way against Osasuna in terms of crosses, dribbles and successful tackles
The Argentine got his first reward of the season last night, fiercely celebrating his goal against Osasuna. Herrera saved his initial effort, but Ocampos was given a lifeline as the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken because the goalkeeper had strayed off his line. He is used to being amongst the goalscorers. Since his arrival, he has scored more league goals than any other Sevillista, scoring 15 goals in 40 appearances, as well as setting up a further four goals. His most recent assist came last week, setting up En-Nesyri at San Mamés.
His penalty yesterday certainly was not all he brought to the team. Ocampos had more crosses, dribbles and successful tackles than any other play, and drew more fouls from opposition players than any other Sevilla player. This is even more impressive as he played in a different role for the entire second half. With Jesús Navas forced off due to injury and the team moving to a 3-5-2 formation, Ocampos played on the right of midfield, having the whole wing to himself. Of course, this gave him more freedom, but also more physical demands. He has two goals so far this season, both from the penalty spot, with the first coming against Bayern in the UEFA Super Cup. Although his goals are his strong point, Lucas Ocampos is so much more than that.
