The points record will have to wait to the last day. Sevilla FC suffered their biggest defeat of the season against a Villarreal CF who made it clear that, at least for the moment, they are not thinking about the Europa League final. In a match which could have started so very differently for the Nervionenses, Villarreal were the first to score. It was one of three for Carlos Bacca, who gave an authentic exhibition against his old team. Diego Carlos would be sent off seven minutes into the second half with Gerard Moreno scoring the other goal.
Sevilla were not affected by the presence of home support. Rather the contrary. Julen Lopetegui's men started strongly and in five minutes they had three clear chances to go in front. De Jong was well positioned and had the two best chances of the opening. Sergio Asenjo was in great form however and reacted perfectly, the only reason Sevilla did not open the scoring. Sevilla had five shots on target, but Asenjo protected his goal. Sevilla were having fortune down both wings but particularly Suso's, but as the game went on their dominance waned and the chances became fewer and far between.
Sevilla FC unleashed an onslaught at the start of the game, but failed to put away any of their chances
To make matters worse, Villarreal scored with practically their first chance, discounting a chance from Moi Gómez that Jules Koundé sent for a corner. The opener came in the 33rd minute when Carlos Bacca headed in a Dani Parejo corner to put Villarreal in front. It was a blow for Sevilla who had done everything bar score and now saw themselves punished by Bacca's clinical header. A goal down, Sevilla lost control of the game and Villarreal arrived comfortably at the break, although without many chances to double their lead.
