A blow for Sevilla FC in their last away trip of the season against a Villarreal who made the most of their chances in a game which saw Diego Carlos sent off after the break

The points record will have to wait to the last day. Sevilla FC suffered their biggest defeat of the season against a Villarreal CF who made it clear that, at least for the moment, they are not thinking about the Europa League final. In a match which could have started so very differently for the Nervionenses, Villarreal were the first to score. It was one of three for Carlos Bacca, who gave an authentic exhibition against his old team. Diego Carlos would be sent off seven minutes into the second half with Gerard Moreno scoring the other goal.

Sevilla were not affected by the presence of home support. Rather the contrary. Julen Lopetegui's men started strongly and in five minutes they had three clear chances to go in front. De Jong was well positioned and had the two best chances of the opening. Sergio Asenjo was in great form however and reacted perfectly, the only reason Sevilla did not open the scoring. Sevilla had five shots on target, but Asenjo protected his goal. Sevilla were having fortune down both wings but particularly Suso's, but as the game went on their dominance waned and the chances became fewer and far between.

Sevilla FC unleashed an onslaught at the start of the game, but failed to put away any of their chances

To make matters worse, Villarreal scored with practically their first chance, discounting a chance from Moi Gómez that Jules Koundé sent for a corner. The opener came in the 33rd minute when Carlos Bacca headed in a Dani Parejo corner to put Villarreal in front. It was a blow for Sevilla who had done everything bar score and now saw themselves punished by Bacca's clinical header. A goal down, Sevilla lost control of the game and Villarreal arrived comfortably at the break, although without many chances to double their lead.

And if things weren't difficult enough, they were to get all the harder in the first minutes of the second half. Gerard Moreno played the ball into Bacca, the Colombian broke free from Koundé as he did so many times in a Sevilla FC shit, and beat Bono to put Villarreal 2-0 up. More bad news would come minutes later when Diego Carlos miscontrolled the ball and had to bring down Yeremy on the edge of the box. The Brazilian was shown a second yellow card and he will miss the last game of the season against Deportivo Alavés, alongside Marcos Acuña who received his fifth booking of the season. With things looking tough for the team, Lopetegui decided to make changes and brought on En-Nesyri and Gudelj for De Jong and Papu Gómez

Bacca's second and Diego Carlos' red card ended the game

The game had gone from Sevilla. It was an uphill battle that got all the harder when Gerard Moreno found himself through on goal against Bono and fired the ball past him to make it 3-0. Lopetegui made more changes, introducing Óliver and Óscar, but it was too late. Carlos Bacca sealed his best performance of the season after making the most of a Bono clearance to deny Raba getting in on the scoresheet. Lopetegui made a final change as Franco Vázquez replaced Lucas Ocampos.

There remains one game left in the season: home to a mathematically safe Deportivo Alavés. Julen Lopetegui's men will have the sole objective of breaking the Club's points record in La Liga. After today's defeat, they will only manage to do so with a win.
