With first place now mathematically out of reach, Sevilla FC will focus on two objectives in these last two matchdays. First, fight with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona to move into second or third. Secondly, try and make history as the Sevilla squad to have won most points in a league campaign.
While second or third will depend on the two other teams, what is in Sevilla's control, especially after the three points last night against Valencia, is breaking the record points total at the Club - a feat that dates back to 14/15 with Unai Emery at the helm. In that season, Sevilla finished fifth with 76 points, just two more than the team currently have with six more to play for. Whatever happens, 74 points is the second best tally ever achieved by the Club, overtaking the 72 won by Jorge Sampaoli's team in 16/17 and the historic season of 06/07 when Juande Ramos' men finished on 71 points.
The record could also be equalled with draws against Villarreal and Alavés, while just one win is enough to break it. If they win again, they will break another record as well: the number of wins in a league season. With yesterday's victory, the team sit on 23 wins in 36 games, a spectacular win rate of 64%. This number equals the record also set back in 14/15. With one more win, whether it be in Villarreal on Sunday or a week later at home against Alavés, it would add more gloss to a season sure to go down in the memory of all Sevillistas.
