Born in González Catán 24 years ago, Gonzalo Montiel started his career at River Plate's academy. After being key for River Plate U20s, he made his debut at 19 years old on 30 April 2016. He began to pick up minutes for the first team in the 2016/17 season, playing four matches. In that very season he would play an important role in the Copa Argentina. He would lift the trophy after playing all the matches from the last-16 to the final in which his team beat CA Tucumán. The defender also performed strongly in the Copa Libertadores, scoring a goal and assisting three, playing every minute from the quarter-finals to the semi-finals where River Plate were defeated by Lanús.
In the 2017/18 season, Montiel made a big step forward in his career. He played 35 matches, 15 of them coming in the league. What stood out though was the 14 appearances he made as he lifted the Copa Libertadores at the Santiago Bernabeu against Boca Juniors. Playing five matches in the Copa Argentina, the team were close to repeating last year's win as they were eliminated on penalties in the semi-finals against Gimnasia. The team secured a double that season as they beat Boca Juniors in the Argentine Super Cup.

The following season was a further consolidation of the right-back's role at River Plate. Our new signing played 12 matches in the league without being substituted. For the second season in a row, Montiel reached the Copa Libertadores final after 12 matches; however, River Plate would be defeated by Flamengo. He won the Copa Argentina once more as River beat Central Córdoba - he played every minute in the cup run. After winning last season's Copa Libertadores, River contested the FIFA Club World Cup where they finished third. An injury prevented him from playing in the Super Cup. Recovering from the blow, he returned to contest the Recopa as River overcame a 1-0 first-leg defeat to win the trophy with a 3-0 win against Club Athletico Paranaense.

In the 2019/20 season, Montiel was a match away from yet another Copa Libertadores final as River were defeated in the semi-finals by Palmeiras. In 11 games, he scored one and assisted six. He would play twice in the Copa Argentina as Boca eliminated River in the last-16. In the season, he played five times in the Diego Maradona Cup (one assist), 19 in the league (two assists), and four times in the Copa America (one assist). In the current season, Gonzalo had played eleven matches in the League Cup, scoring three goals, in addition to five matches in the Copa Libertadores and four in the league.
Montiel started out for the national team at the U20 level where he played two qualifiers for the U20 World Cup. He made his debut for the senior team in a friendly in the run-up to Copa América 2019. He has played 13 times for Argentina, winning the Copa América 2021 after playing four out of the seven matches.
