Everyone talks about Sevilla FC in the Europa League and it’s only ever positive, which is backed up by the fact that the club who has won the most Europa League titles has a brilliant record in the competition. If we dig a bit deeper into the study on the matches at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, the statistics are truly phenomenal. For example, in the last thirty home matches in the Europa League, without including the final in Germany in 2020, our record is incredible. 27 victories, 2 draws which came against Slavia Prague (2019) and Cluj (2020), and only once loss which was against Athletic Club in 2016. Even after this loss, we qualified for the semifinals after a penalty shootout victory. In these matches, we have scored 74 goals and only conceded 11. In fact, we have only conceded goals in nine of these matches, and have kept a clean sheet in the other 21 fixtures.
Looking through our defensive record in the Europa League, it’s worth underlining that the last goal we conceded in this competition was in the playoffs last year against Dynamo Zagreb (3-1). From then, none of our opponents have scored at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, neither West Ham United, PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbache nor Manchester United. Interestingly, that goal scored by the Croats which was not enough for them to progress, is the only goal we have conceded in the tournament in the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán in the last nine matches.
With regard to our history in the competition, José Luis Mendilibar’s men made history with their incredible victory over United last night. With regard to the total number of victories, the club has now equalled the most number of victories in this competition, a record which had only been held by Sporting Lisbon, at 91 wins. Interestingly, our club reached this figure just as Lisbon were trying to reach the semifinals, where they would have had us as their opponent. Only Inter Milan are now ahead of us, who this season have only participated in the Champions League, as they sit on 96 victories. By winning just one of the two semi final fixtures against Juventus, the men from Nervión will occupy the second position on this list. As of now, Sevilla have won 91 matches, drawn 31 and lost 33 in the UEFA Europa League.
